Greenstone
Overview
Greenstone is a modest coastal city spread across a broad river delta, where warm sea air and waters saturated with life magic produce a verdant oasis from the harsh desert landscape. The streets range from tight, weather‑worn alleys near the old docks to carefully planned avenues closer to the heart of power.
The Delta and Island
The city straddles the branching mouth of a great river, its channels splitting around a central artificial island built of pale stone. The island rises slightly above the surrounding lowlands, dense with estates, towers, and official compounds that overlook both river and sea. Canals and quays cut into its edges, giving private access to the water while walls and controlled gates limit who may step onto its streets.
The Old City
The old city hugs the original shoreline and oldest docks, a tangle of cramped stone buildings and warped wooden structures. Narrow lanes twist between leaning houses, many of them linked overhead by bridges and walkways that create permanent shade. Salt, river mist, and the lingering smell of magic‑rich vegetation hang in the air, softening edges and feeding slow decay.
Outer Districts
Beyond the old core, newer districts spread across the delta, following raised roads and embankments. These neighborhoods mix homes, warehouses, and workshops with patches of verdant greenery. The further from the main channels you go, the more the streets blur into marshy fringes, stilt houses, and half‑claimed land.
The Bridge
A great stone bridge links the old shoreline to the central island, broad enough for carts and formal processions. It arches over a deep, busy channel, a natural choke point where guards, checkpoints, and wards can be placed to control movement. From the bridge, the contrast is clear: weathered, crowded waterfront on one side, ordered stone and cultivated beauty on the other.
Temple Square
Like any sizeable city, Greenstone has its own temple district. Like most sizeable cities, this district consists of a large open square surrounded by temples. Temples to the most prominent deities directly circle the square and reflect their patron's spheres of influence. For example, the temple to Knowledge resembles a large library while the temple to Healer looks like an unassuming medical center.
As the saying goes, "Hang around in Temple Square long enough and you're certain to see a god."
The Underground Transit
Beneath the city runs an enclosed transit line, a network of tunnels and stations that connect key riverfront districts and the island. The carriages glide along fixed paths with smooth, silent magic, insulated from floodwaters and surface chaos. Stations range from plain stone platforms near the surface to deeper nodes where the walls are etched with complex sigils that help stabilize both magic and the ground above.
City Edge and Green Belt
Greenstone’s outer edge blurs into fields, orchards, and managed wetlands that drink in the river’s life‑enhanced waters. Low warded embankments and boundary stones mark where true city ends and half‑wild delta begins. Seen from the sea or from upriver, the first sign of Greenstone is a band of impossible green where there ought to be scrub and mud, crowned by stone, towers, and the pale gleam of the island at its center.
Magic Density & Adventurers
Greenstone lies in a low magic density region. Most of the monsters that spawn in the broader geography are Iron rank, with few Bronze and exceedingly rare Silvers. Lesser rank monsters spawn as well, but those are handled easily enough by elderly women with stiff brooms.
Adventurers who came into their powers in regions with higher magic density sometimes choose to travel to Greenstone. The low magic density means they can venture out on their own, instead of constantly working under the watchful yet necessary eye of a Silver Ranker.
Society & Politics
Greenstone is ruled by Duke Greenstone in a manner that is boring, efficient, and quiet.
Greenstone boasts several aristocratic families, from which many adventurers of differing levels of proficiency emerge. It is the ancestral home to one of the three most widely respected adventuring families in the world, though their compound is actually located outside of the city. All of this family's young adventurers make a pilgrimage to Greenstone at the start of their careers.
The city has a measure of most things one might find in a city, ranging from arts to crime, theaters to fighting pits, squalor to luxury, and foods originating everywhere in the world.
